Stem Cell Treatment For Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries can happen through accident, trauma, or disease. The spinal cord is the link between the brain and the rest of the body, and body functions may be affected by conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and traumatic accidents.

In the past, a spinal cord injury meant loss of function below the point of injury, but modern science and stem cell research and technology has provided a number of breakthroughs in treatments for spinal cord injury patients. click here

Stem Cell Treatments and Technology
The spinal cord is made up of neural cells that carry all electrical impulses from the brain to the spine to the muscles and organs of the body. Glial cells support neural cells and are an important component of the spinal cord. There are two different types of glial cells; oligodendrocytes, which make up the protective sheath covering of nerves, along with myelin, and astrocytes, which provide an adequate growth environment for neural cells.

Stem cell research has learned how to create new neurons. An injured brain or spinal cord may not be able to create new neurons by itself, but stem cell scientists have discovered neural stem cells in adult brains that can be stimulated to multiply or divide into neural cells that have been lost through central nervous system or spinal cord injury and disease processes.

Combination Stem Cell Therapies
Combination therapy is a combination of stem cell therapies that produce neural cells with myelin sheath protection, and gene therapy. To date, many of these technologies are still undergoing clinical trials in the United States.

Throughout the United States, researchers, biotechnical companies and stem cell researchers are undergoing Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials for results after injecting oligodendrocytes from embryonic stem cells into the spinal cord in the hopes that they will replicate themselves. Researchers from California to New York are focusing stem cell research on astrocytes for generating new nerve fiber growth.

Research technologies and the number of clinical trials in the United States continue to advance as new discoveries are made. In the meantime, many Americans suffering from spinal cord injury and its limitations have experienced some benefit through stem cell treatments and therapies offered in globally recognized stem cell centers around the world.

How to Avoid Gum Disease – Info

The gums can often be neglected in the course of taking good care of your overall dental health. As most of the focus is on the teeth and how to properly take care of them, you may be neglecting your gums – which are just as important to your overall dental health as your pearly whites.

The gums provide your teeth with the support they need to be able to give you the bright smiles you wish to have for a very long time. As such, they need the same amount of dental attention and care that you give to your teeth! Your dentist will be able to provide you with tips and the right information on how to take proper care of your gums, and how to avoid developing gum problems – but you can also do a lot on your part to ensure that your gums will stay as healthy as possible.

Gum Disease Prevention
The following are some of the tips your dentist will also be giving to you, to avoid having gum disease or gum problems: how to take care of your gums from Philadelphiapa.dentist

• Make it a habit to brush your teeth on a regular basis – after every meal, at least twice daily. The frequency of tooth brushing is not the only thing that you need to remember – it is also important to properly do the tooth brushing, to ensure that food particles are not left on your teeth or gums. Your dentist will be able to provide you with tips or even a demonstration on how to properly brush your teeth.

• Use dental floss in combination with proper and regular tooth brushing habits. The use of dental floss is encouraged by dentists in removing any food bits or particles that are stuck in between teeth and between the gum line, especially in places that tooth brushing may not be able to reach.

Do not smoke, or use tobacco products. The chemicals in cigarettes and other tobacco products can adversely affect the health of your gums, and can lead to other serious complications regarding your dental health.

• Visit your dentist on a regular basis. Regular dental check-ups will enable your dentist to ensure that your gums are in perfect condition; regular visits to the dentist will also help in the early diagnosis and treatment of gum problems.

Besides the above measures, make sure you massage your gums regularly. This helps in improving blood circulation and thus, making both the gums and teeth stronger. Gums are the parts from where the roots of teeth emerge. Hence, remember, healthy gums lead to healthy teeth.

Know About Food Festivals

Whenever you are in need of culinary inspiration you are bound to find it by visiting a food festival or market. From humble farmers markets to regional food festivals you are destined to discover a wealth of gastronomic delights to be savoured. A couple of weeks ago my husband Simon and I visited the Exeter Festival of South West England Food and Drink, which was held in the centre of Exeter around Northernhay Gardens and the Exeter Castle Courtyard.

This is the 6th year running of the Festival, which is the largest of its kind in the region, and its best yet. There were over 100 stalls by local producers, cooking demonstrations by top chefs and even live music on the Friday and Saturday nights. The Festival was inspired by local Michelin star chef Michael Caines, who kept things organized in the cooking demonstrations where there were a number of head to head cook-offs between local head chefs, including a special guest appearance by Matt Dawson – the winner of Celebrity Master Chef see article for more details.

Apart from the exciting cooking demonstrations there were so many other wonderful sights, sounds and smells to savour. The numerous food and drink stalls showcasing local producers were a sight to see, and better yet most of them offered samples of their products giving you the chance to try before you buy. I was of course on the lookout for cows’ milk free products and I was not disappointed – several stalls catered for goats’ and sheep cheese and, when asked, most stall owners were happy to discuss the ingredients and manufacture of their products with me, giving me peace of mind.

So next time you see a regional food festival advertised I would definitely recommend taking some time out of your day to visit it – you won’t regret it. And also don’t forget about the more humble, but just as insightful, local farmers markets for your weekly dose of soul food.
